The 1607 first edition of Cowell's Interpreter was supressed by royal proclamation dated 25 March 1610 as insulting to the King and Commons, and all copies were ordered to be burned by the public hangman. As well as being a Law Dictionary it contains a number of obscure English words which the author had noted in his reading. Subsequent editions were purged of passages that James VI & I thought disparaging of the royal prerogative and other matters, including the reputation of Littleton's Tenures.
